Where History Started:
Charles Enerson was mightily used by God to pioneer and develop churches in Zambia and South Africa. In March 1967, Charles and his wife planted a Sunday school in the Krugerdorp Scout Hall. The church that has become known as the “Ligthhouse” Assemby of God, grew out of that Sunday school. In 1969, with a membership of about 20, Charles left to pioneer a church in Vereeniging.
Beckett Shaw took over the ministry and in 1969, decided to relocate the church to the Town School. Beckett’s three daughters had a marvellous impact on the youth and the church focussed on reaching out to young people, which was what it had been founded on.
Peter Watt assumed the ministry for the period January 1975 and June 1976, during which time Mike and Joey Grey (presently ministering in Westville, Durban) were saved. Others were added to the Church and during this time and the offices of Elders and Deacons were established. The first Elders were Marney Pretorius and Barney Krynauw, while Tommy Geyser and Willy Pelser were the deacons.
Les Helen, a Prominent figure in the Assembly of God, succeeded Peter Watt and pastored the church in the 1976-77 period. The venue moved from Town School to some stables with a loft called "The Barn", which was at the rear of the present Church Building in 86 Viljoen Street. Mark Starbuck became an understudy or intern and was sent to assist with a new ministry that had been started in Randfontein. Mark will soon be pastoring a church in Southampton England. Neville Momberg (a current elder) was saved under the ministry of Les in 1976.
Ron Gardner followed and stayed from 1977 to November 1978. He had the vision for the church building program, but was not able to get it started. Amongst the congregation at that time, were Eric Otto (a current elder), Vic Momberg and James Mc Millan. James left shortly after 1978, to Pastor the Assembly of God in Rustenburg. Ron Gardiner is now pastoring an A.F.M. Church in Windhoek, Namibia.
David and Maureen Onions took over the ministry of the church in December 1978. Maureen Onions is the daughter of James E. Mullan, the Apostolic Missionary to Africa who planted churches wherever he went. She is a Globe trotting preacher and author of "God Peels An Onion". On the 8th of May 1979 David took the first bold step in missions and gave R30 per month to the Portuguese Radio Mission Station. Today we have churches and missionaries in Mozambique, who minister in Portuguese.
Foundations were laid for the existing building In May 1979, the terrace was landscaped and the building completed in November of 1979 (the cinema chairs, which are still in use, were purchased in July 1979). The building was painted in December 1979, and by April 1980 the carpets were installed. By the end of 1980 the congregation had grown to over 100 members. David and Maureen left for Cape Town after dedicating the building with a Bookshop called "The Lighthouse".
Costa and Lorraine Mitchell (daughter of Pioneering Father Charles Enerson ) took over the reigns in January 1981, but only stayed till the end of the year. Costa and Lorraine are presently leading The Vineyard Ministry.
Tommy Geyser succeeded them in January 1982. By July 1982 church meetings were being advertised in the West Rand Times and new members were being added and the church was growing. Tommy had been radically saved after being taken into custody by the police. His unusual ministry was popular and he left the “Lighthouse in June 1983, when he immigrated to the USA. Tommy was and is still a true evangelist, and it is said that “even the saved get saved" when Tommy preaches.
Peter Kilian (the pastor with a heart for Italy) pastored the church for the next 3 years, from July 1983 till September 1986. Peter decided to financially support Wally Kuhn, a Missionary to the Tswanas. In November 1985 the ministry at Randfontein became a priority, with Vic Momberg shouldering most of the responsibility. Hennie Coetzee was a committed member who later took on the ministry at Phalaborwa and then Stutterheim. In April 1984 Peter led a tour to Italy and a passion was born to evangelise the Italians
Alan and Eileen Tinkler took over from Peter in October 1986 and stayed until September 1988. During this time, Patrick Donnely and Vic Momberg continued their excellent work in Randfontein, while Hannes Coetzee and Francis Jardim were breaking into leadership ranks.
Terry and Eileen Brinded moved to “The Lighthouse” from the Westonaria Assembly in October 1988 and stayed until he moved to Port Elizabeth in December 1994. Terry had a strong teaching ministry and became the Regional Representative for the West. The “stables” burned down in 1990, which opened the way for a new Sunday school building to be erected. This was opened on the 5th of August 1990.
When Terry left Andy May and Patrick [Pat] Moffat ministered alternatively from the pulpit. People streamed in and Sunday visitors grew dramatically.
In April 1995 Pat and Louisa Moffat (now the longest serving Pastors at The Lighthouse) took over the leadership and set out to repay Bank overdraft and pay off the outstanding Bond, which was achieved within months. The Church remains Debt Free to this day, which has allowed the Manse [a new premises] to be improved and the church to make greater contributions to missions [Pat's love and heart touches this area].
During the same year, it was decided to transform “The Lighthouse” into a Home Cell Church where people felt loved and were able to be transparent. In 1996 Pat went to Singapore to train and research the Home Cell church of Laurence Kong, at the Faith Community Baptist Church. Now our Home Cells are a place where the Word of God is ministered with “Love”, and cell members are cared for by one another. They are a type of mini church, similar to what we envisage the New Testament church to have been like. The Lighthouse has not developed into a fully fledged, or Classical Cell Church, but is rather a Church with Cells. We had 14 Homes Cells, with an average
weekly attendance of 112. The home cells have now decreased to approx. 6 due to unforeseen circumstances, and there are approx. 58 attendees in total.
Members have remained faithful and God has continued adding to the congregation, with new and vibrant branches being grafted in. The Youth Ministry was given a more prominent status and a youth pastor [Melvin Challens] was appointed to this ministry. Anthony McAslin and Marinus Gerding became Elders. Both families have since moved to Canada, as the Lord has lead them.
Billy Verster founded “The Lighthouse” Bible College in May 2001. Billy left the Lighthouse to pursue his calling at the Westonaria Assemblies of God Church and the Bible College continue for some time after [approx. 2.5 years, but it "ran aground" due to any further lack of interest from the people in general. The Bible College
was shutdown at the beginning of 2004.
The Current Lighthouse Assembly
Over the years the character of “The Lighthouse” has changed and adapted to local conditions. It is presently a Haven for the Hurting and the Broken, Single Parents and grieving spouses, together with the poor. All are part of the caring program of the church, which is creating an environment in which they can be reached and spiritually mended. This is at the heart of our vision, we aim to be a Family church caring for the families in our community. We have established Home Cells where the Word is shared and lives are changed.
Prayer meetings are held at the church every morning between 06:00 and 07:00, these prayer meetings are not restricted to church members and are open to everyone in the community. We also reach across to other churches in prayer and support of Missions and Missionaries.
We also have prayer meetings on Wednesday nights from 19H00 to 20H00.
The Lighthouse has 250 members, with further regular visitors. It has two services each Sunday, with the seating capacity of 180 often being exceeded so that the minor [overflow] hall needs to be used. Our Sunday School attracts approximately 35 children each week. The youth has grown to 15 teenagers [average], now known as ICU [In Christ United] and the junior youth [Young Ones] have grown to 20 [average].
Senior youth is run by Geoffrey Coetzee on Friday nights at 19H00 to 21H30 normally, unless they go on an outing.

The Immediate Future
The congregation is steadily outgrowing the present facilities, as the Lord adds to our numbers. Upgrading and innovative changes are constantly being researched so that we can effectively reach our neighbourhood and the nations with the GOOD NEWS about Jesus Christ our Lord
and Saviour. We have also added modern technology to the methods the Word is presented during services and we trust in the leading of the Father God.
Richly we extend an invitation to all who share our vision to unite with us in the prayer of Jesus:(John 17:20,21)
"I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one..."
So that the world may be WON !
